June 29, 2023
We, the members of the Carleton University Human Rights Society (CUHRS), stand in solidarity with the University of Waterloo community and vehemently condemn the horrifying gender-based, hate-fuelled attack that occurred within a gender studies classroom on June 28th, 2023. We are deeply saddened and outraged by this act of violence, which not only violates the principles of respect, dignity, and equality but also threatens the safety and well-being of individuals within educational institutions.
Such incidents remind us of the urgent need to address systemic issues, promote inclusivity, and foster a culture of tolerance and understanding. We believe that education should be a safe space where diverse perspectives can be shared, discussed, and respected. It is disheartening to witness acts of violence that undermine these fundamental values.
We extend our heartfelt support and solidarity to the victims, their families, and the entire UWaterloo community during this difficult time. We recognize the emotional and psychological impact of such traumatic events and encourage survivors and witnesses to seek the necessary support and resources available to them.
As an organization committed to human rights advocacy, CUHRS reaffirms our dedication to promoting a society free from violence, discrimination, and hatred. We will continue our efforts to raise awareness, foster dialogue, and drive positive change on our campus and beyond.
We urge university administrations, educational institutions, and governments to prioritize the safety and well-being of students, staff, and faculty by implementing proactive measures to prevent such incidents and address the underlying factors that contribute to gender-based violence and hate crimes.
In the face of adversity, we must unite and stand together against all forms of violence, bigotry, and discrimination. We call upon our members, allies, and the wider community to join us in advocating for a more inclusive, respectful, and just society, where every individual can live without fear of violence or prejudice.
Together, we can create a world where everyone is valued and treated with dignity, regardless of their gender, identity, race, or background.
