The Carleton University Human Rights Society will be holding its annual elections to select the 2026–2027 Executive Committee. These elections are an opportunity for the CUHRS community to participate in the democratic governance of the society and help shape its direction for the coming year.
All executive positions are open for candidacy, and all active CUHRS members (including all students in the Human Rights and Social Justice program) are eligible to vote. The election will be administered by the Chief Returning Officer with assistance from the Carleton University Senate Office to ensure a fair, transparent, and inclusive process.

Notice is hereby given that elections will be held for the 2026–2027 Executive Committee of the Carleton University Human Rights Society (CUHRS). The election will be administered by the Chief Returning Officer (CRO) in accordance with CUHRS election procedures.

The election will proceed according to the following schedule:
Nomination Period: March 23 – April 6, 2026
Candidate Confirmation Period: April 6 – April 8, 2026
Campaign Period: April 8 – April 12, 2026
Voting Period: April 13 – April 15, 2026
Results Announcement: April 17, 2026
Advertising Process
A one week notice of the executive elections will be posted on the CUHRS Instagram, website, and Discord channel. The notice will be sent out to all general members of the Society through the Riseup Listserv mailing list, and to all HRSJ students with the assistance of the administrator of the Institute of Interdisciplinary Studies.
Candidate Eligibility
To run for a position, candidates must meet at least one of the following requirements:
Be an active member of CUHRS for at least one academic semester, or
Be enrolled in the Human Rights and Social Justice program at Carleton University.
All candidates must also be students in good academic standing with Carleton University.
Voter Eligibility
The following individuals are eligible to vote in CUHRS elections:
Active members of the Carleton University Human Rights Society, including all students enrolled in the Human Rights and Social Justice program at Carleton University.
Nomination Process
To be considered as a candidate, nominees must submit a nomination form including:
Full name and student number
The position they are seeking
A candidate statement (maximum 250 words)
The names of five Carleton students endorsing their nomination
Nominations must be submitted through the CUHRS nomination form. The Chief Returning Officer will verify all nominations before the campaign period begins.
Campaign Guidelines
Candidates may campaign during the designated campaign period subject to the following rules:
Campaigning may take place through social media and word of mouth.
Campaign materials must be respectful and consistent with CUHRS values.
CUHRS resources, including official mailing lists or accounts, may not be used for personal campaign promotion.
Negative campaigning or targeting other candidates is strictly prohibited.
Voting Guidelines
Voting will take place electronically through a secure online voting platform administered by the Senate office.
Voting will be anonymous.
The candidate receiving the highest number of votes for each position will be elected.
In the event of a tie, a runoff election will be held within three days.
Election results will be announced publicly through official CUHRS communication channels by the Chief Returning Officer on April 17, 2026.

The Executive Committee of the Carleton University Human Rights Society conducted an electronic poll on 15 March 2026 to approve the appointment of the co-President, Nir Hagigi, as Chief Returning Officer for the 2026–2027 CUHRS Executive Committee elections.
As the nominee for the position of CRO, a conflict of interest was identified. Accordingly, Nir Hagigi recused himself from participation in the poll.
The executive committee of the Carleton University Human Rights Society approved the appointment as presented.

As stipulated in Article 5.4 of the Constitution, the Carleton University Human Rights Society is structured with the following executive portfolios, each essential to the effective functioning and impact of the society:
Co-Presidents: Provide visionary leadership, adhere to CUSA Society guidelines, and oversee club meetings. Foster inclusivity, resolve conflicts, and manage financial responsibilities. Act as liaisons to CUSA and CASG, supporting fellow executives and ensuring transparent communication.
Vice-President of Finance: Lead long-term financial planning, analyze risks, and collaborate closely with Co-Presidents. Maintain financial records, prepare budgets, and ensure responsible fund disbursement. Support the broader Executive Team as needed.
Vice-President of Membership: Oversee membership processes, design member satisfaction forums, and manage monthly newsletters. Lead general member meetings, collaborate with Co-Presidents, and provide support to the Executive Team.
Vice-Presidents of Communications: The Vice-Presidents of Communications play a pivotal role in facilitating all internal and external communications within the club. Their responsibilities encompass managing various social media platforms, websites, and other communication channels.
Vice-President of Equity, Diversity, Inclusion, and Social Justice: Champion an inclusive environment, guide executive officers on diversity matters, and collaborate with university guidelines. Serve as a central resource, organize events, and support the broader Executive Team.
Vice-President of Administration: Manage meeting logistics, record minutes, and coordinate the society's agenda. Act as a liaison with Year representatives and provide essential support to the Executive Team.
Vice-President of Student Advocacy: Administer student development programs, coordinate volunteer initiatives, and design networking events. Assess student needs, plan events, and provide support to the broader Executive Team.
VP of Philanthropy: Plan fundraisers for external charitable organizations. Facilitate workshops, engage with professionals, and host events reflecting CUHRS values.
VP of Research: Provide research support, facilitate collaboration, and disseminate research outcomes. Responsible for a monthly research newsletter and an annual research event.
VP(s) of Outreach: Expand CUHRS reach through active recruitment, collaboration with departments, and planning joint events with other campus organizations.
