The Carleton University Human Rights Society is committed to defending justice, dignity, and human rights for all people, both on campus and beyond. As part of our advocacy and educational mandate, we regularly issue public statements in response to urgent political developments, institutional decisions, and broader issues affecting marginalized communities locally and globally.
These statements reflect our principled positions on a wide array of topics related to social justice and equity. We issue these statements when we believe that silence is not an option - when institutions fail to act, when rights are under threat, or when solidarity demands a clear stance.
Our statements are shaped through collaborative discussion and reflect the values of our membership and executive team.

On June 9, 2025, the Israeli military violently intercepted the Gaza Freedom Flotilla in international water, 185 km off the coast of Gaza. We condemn this unlawful act in the strongest possible terms. The Madleen, carrying baby formula, flour, medical equipment, and water purification supplies, was en route to Gaza to peacefully challenge Israel’s illegal siege and to deliver life-saving aid.

We stand in unwavering solidarity with the Gaza Freedom Flotilla and the courageous activists aboard the Madleen, who are currently undertaking a dangerous mission to break Israel’s illegal siege on Gaza and deliver humanitarian aid to Palestinians enduring severe deprivation.

We, the Carleton University Human Rights Society, strongly condemn the attempts by Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin to negotiate Ukraine’s territorial sovereignty without its direct involvement. Recent reports indicate that the United States is engaging in discussions with Vladimir Putin that could lead to Ukraine ceding up to a fifth of its internationally recognized land. Such negotiations, conducted without Ukraine’s consent, violate the fundamental principles of sovereignty and international law.

We, the members of the Carleton University Human Rights Society (CUHRS), make this statement on the ongoing conflict and human rights violations in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC). The suffering of the Congolese people, especially women and children, is deeply concerning, and is rooted in a legacy of colonial exploitation, compounded by the actions of the current government under Felix Tshisekedi, the Rwandan government under Paul Kagame, multinational corporations, and the failure of the international community to take concrete action.
