We stand in unwavering solidarity with the Gaza Freedom Flotilla and the courageous activists aboard the Madleen, who are currently undertaking a dangerous mission to break Israel’s illegal siege on Gaza and deliver humanitarian aid to Palestinians enduring severe deprivation.
The Madleen departed from Catania, Sicily, on June 1. It carries essential aid supplies, including baby formula, flour, rice, diapers, medical equipment, and water purification kits, which are intended to alleviate the Israeli-imposed humanitarian crisis in Gaza, where, according to the United Nations and the Integrated Food Security Phase Classification, 100% of the 2.1 million residents face severe food shortages and famine due to the total blockade.
Their mission is a nonviolent protest against the blockade, aiming to draw global attention to the dire situation in Gaza and the broader implications of collective punishment, ethnic cleansing, and genocide.
On June 5, the Madleen responded to a distress call and rescued four Sudanese migrants who had jumped into the Mediterranean Sea to avoid capture by the Libyan coast guard.
Additionally, the flotilla faces threats from Israeli authorities, who have declared their unlawful intent to prevent the ship from reaching Gaza.
This is not the first time that Israel has targeted the Gaza Freedom Flotilla. On May 2 of this year, the flotilla ship Conscience was bombed in international waters near Malta by Israeli drone-fired missiles aimed at disabling the vessel.
It echoed the deadly 2010 assault on the Mavi Marmara, in which Israeli commandos boarded the humanitarian ship in international waters and killed ten activists, injuring dozens more.
As student organizations committed to universal human rights, we reaffirm our commitment to upholding international humanitarian principles and we stand with those who act courageously to alleviate human suffering.
We urge the Carleton community, and especially the administration, as well as the broader public, to advocate for an end to the blockade and to support efforts that promote justice and human rights for all.
